The region includes 8 cities in total, but the most well-known ones are İzmir, Aydın, and Muğla. These cities are preferred by tourists because of their coastal location. The combination of the warm sea of the Aegean and its lush nature is perfect. However, the only reason why tourists visit this region is of course not the sea, sand, and sun.

Considering its historical background, this region has always been a valuable region due to the presence of water resources. For this reason, the Aegean has hosted many civilizations for centuries. The Eastern Roman Empire, the Great Seljuk Empire, and the Ottoman Empire are the most important of them. Many structures from these periods still exist today. Some of them were unearthed as a result of intensive excavations.

There are many ancient cities of gigantic size and magnificent beauty in this region. Some of these ancient cities are well-known. However, some are not known. At this point, we will talk about a few ancient cities that are not known by everyone but with unique beauty.

For example, the Ancient City of Aizonai is an ancient Roman city located in Kütahya. It includes the Temple of Zeus and the Stadium-Theater complex. The mentioned temple is known as one of the best preserved Zeus temples in the world. Another ancient city is the Kaunos ancient city in Muğla. There are huge king tombs carved into the rock in this field. Despite all its beauty, this ancient city is not well known. Other lesser-known ancient cities are Laodikeia and Sardis. The ancient city of Laodikeia is in Denizli. And the ancient city of Sardis is in Manisa.

The ancient city of Ephesus is one of the most known places in the Aegean. Ephesus is the most beautifully preserved city of the Ancient Greek Period. Also, it is among the UNESCO Cultural Heritage. Also, the Temple of Artemis is located in this region. It is considered one of the 7 wonders of the world.  The other location is the House of the Virgin Mary. This structure is one of the places you should go to in Izmir. On the other hand, Pamukkale Travertines, Hierapolis Ancient City, and Aphrodisias Ancient City… All of these are among the places you must see.
